Showers, thundershowers and strong winds expected across Sri Lanka

BY Nadhvi Irfan

The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers or thundershowers for Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, North-western provinces, and the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts today (11).

Showers are also expected in Anuradhapura, Matale, and Mannar districts, while Uva, Ampara, Batticaloa, and Polonnaruwa may experience afternoon or nighttime rainfall.

Fairly heavy rain exceeding 50 mm is likely in parts of Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara.

Winds of 30-40 kmph are anticipated over central hill slopes and in Northern, North-central, North-western, Trincomalee, and Hambantota districts.

The sun will be directly overhead in areas including Maningamuwa, Rambewa, Kahatagasdigiliya, Eithala Wetunu Wewa, and Muthur at 12.11 p.m. today as part of its apparent northward motion.

Sri Lanka, like many other countries, continues to experience the effects of global climate change. Unseasonal rainfall patterns, frequent thunderstorms, and intensified wind conditions have increasingly disrupted daily life and impacted sectors such as agriculture, fisheries, and transport.

In recent years, extreme weather has become more common, causing flash floods in urban areas and prolonged droughts in farming regions. These fluctuations not only challenge food security but also put added strain on water resources and energy supply.

Authorities urge the public to remain cautious during thundershowers, as temporary strong winds and lightning may cause localized damage. People living in vulnerable areas are advised to stay informed and take preventive measures to minimize the risk.
